The present-day world of art is impossible to imagine without its animation-related components, primarily, animated movies and TV series, which are happily consumed both by media critics and general audiences. However, unlike other art forms such as painting and sculpture, which have been renowned and appreciated for millennia, animation is a comparatively recent addition to the artistic pantheon. Therefore, it is important to recognize and laud the man who introduced animated movies to the mainstream media and helped popularize it, the creator of one of the most popular animated characters in the world, Walt Disney himself.
Though controversies regarding Walt Disney’s life have been surfacing in the present-day media, the impact that he produced on visual arts and his overall contribution to the popularization of the animation genre s a crucial art form are undeniable. Arguably, it was not exclusively him who produced animated movies, with a team of multiple experts working on each production. However, one still must recognize Wal Disney’s impact on the creation of his studio’s art pieces, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” being hos first worldly renowned creation (Eren, 2023). The specified artwork has brought animated movies to the big screen, introducing countless people to the idea of animation as a new tool for artistic expression.
The work in question might seem to be an art piece directed specifically at children and, therefore, lacking substantial depth, yet, being a representation of a famous folk tale and incorporating technological solutions that were truly innovative at the time, the movie prompts quite a number of questions about human culture. Specifically, it asks whether stories aimed at children can be appreciated by adults as well, and whether these stories can be told in a new and captivating way. Furthermore, the film asks whether the art of animation can serve as the means of pushing the boundaries of visual experiences. Indeed, since animation is not restricted by the boundaries of reality that movies are, the range of visual experiences that it may offer are truly countless, which warrants the question of where the actual limits for animated movies lie (Eren, 2023). Finally, the film raises the question of whether stories that are centuries old can provide any value and be reinterpreted in a new and inspiring way.
Moreover, “The Snow White” must have been influenced by a range of culture-related questions itself since it incorporates the elements that not only children but also adults find fascinating even decades after the movie was released. Specifically, the artwork in question must have been influenced by the question of how the stories that are typically told verbally can be reinvented with the help of audiovisual media (Eren, 2023). More importantly, the question that the movie must have been inspired by is how one can retain the core message of these stories while also adding something new to them, thus, imbuing them with the meaning that is both relevant and timeless.
Walt Disney’s image may have become controversial over years, yet his innovative thinking and his multiple animated movies, as well as his other contributions to the development of the animation industry and the art of animation cannot be denied. Having revolutionized the concept of animation, Disney introduced the specified art form into the popular culture, therefore, making it accessible to anyone. Thus, Walt Disney’s impact on culture needs to be recognized and appreciated.
